Sarnia police are searching for suspects after a war memorial was vandalized at Veterans Park on Tuesday.

Police said someone managed to pry the copper rifle from the bronze Canadian soldier, known as “Tommy”, located atop the Cenotaph at Wellington Street and Victoria Street.

Police are asking for the public’s help in locating the rifle, and tracking down the person or persons responsible.

Cst. John Sottosanti said it’s possible the suspects will look to turn the rifle into scrap money.

“There has been a money component to it, but at this time it’s difficult to say,” said Sottosanti. “That possibility does exist because materials like copper and bronze do fetch a lot of money. We hope that if it’s brought in, even if it’s cut up, that people are able to look at it and identify it as what it was.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Constable Jeff Rovers at 519-344-8861, extension 6159, or Sarnia-Lambton Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
