Local COVID death toll increases one year after first cases reported

A year to the day that Sarnia-Lambton recorded its first COVID-19 infections, over 40 new cases and another death have been reported.

In its daily update Thursday, Lambton Public Health said there's been a 48th COVID-related death, an individual in their 70s.

The health unit reported 41 new confirmed cases for a total of 2,692 since March 25, 2020. The number of recoveries increased by 27 to 2,422, putting the active case count at 222, up 13.

Active institutional, school and workplace outbreaks went up one over the past 24 hours for a total of 15. A new outbreak was declared Wednesday at an unnamed workplace with five positive cases.

Bluewater Health has eight positive patients in hospital, up from six on Wednesday.
