Sarnia man charged with first degree murder denied bail

A Sarnia man charged with first degree murder in the death of a woman at a Lee Court home has been denied bail.

Joseph Dominic DiCarlo, 45, in orange prison clothes and a blue medical mask, was remanded in custody at Sarnia Jail following a three-part virtual bail hearing that concluded Wednesday morning. DiCarlo is to appear again by video in the Ontario Court of Justice April 6, 2021.

In ruling on the bail application, Superior Court Justice John Desotti reviewed the course of events that led to the death of 39-year-old Natalie Bartlett. He concluded detention is necessary to maintain public confidence, from a reasonable member of society, in the administration of justice. Bail hearing proceedings including any evidence called are subject to a publication ban.

At about 12:30 a.m. January 14, police, fire and EMS responded to a call about a woman suffering serious injuries at a home on Lee Court, off Murphy Road north of Michigan Avenue. The woman was transported to hospital where she was pronounced dead. A suspect was arrested at the scene.

Police said at the time that the victim and the accused were known to each other.
