Sarnia man arrested after stolen police cruiser crashes in Whitby

A Sarnia man accused of stealing a police cruiser that was involved in a serious crash in Whitby, is facing multiple charges.

Durham police said the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in following a two-vehicle collision at around 7:10 p.m. Sunday.

Police said while officers were responding to a suspicious person call in the area of Victoria Street, a police cruiser was stolen and later struck a civilian vehicle near Garden Street and Dundas Street. Two occupants of the civilian vehicle were transported to hospital with serious injuries.

Police said the suspect, 30-year-old Jesse Johnson, was arrested at the scene and also taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The Sarnia man is facing several charges, including break and enter with intent, theft and possession of property over $5,000, failing to stop for police, two counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm, as well as firearm-related offences.

Johnson was being held for a bail hearing.
