Applications open for young entrepreneur funding

Young entrepreneurs have a shot at funding to help get new businesses off the ground.

The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership (SLEP) is accepting applications for the competitive Summer Company Program.

Approved applicants will receive a $1,500 grant to launch a business and are eligible for another $1,500 after successful completion of the program.

Development Coordinator Chantelle Core said the program is open to students between the ages of 15 and 29 who are returning to school in the fall.

"For high school students they're required to run their business for eight weeks full-time and for the college and university level, they're required to run their business for 12 weeks full-time," said Core.

She said over the years, they've worked with students in many different areas ranging from seasonal ventures to 3D printing businesses. Core said last year, Blue Coast Bundles was launched as an e-commerce business.

"They created incredible themed boxes using local products from other local businesses that were potentially struggling with delivering product to customers," she said. "They captured the shop local theme and provided a great opportunity for residents to experience a variety of products."
