MP Gladu taking on additional committee work in Ottawa

Sarnia-Lambton's Conservative MP has been elected by her peers as Vice Chair of the House of Commons Liaison Committee.

The liaison group consists of all the chairs of the parliamentary committees, which meets to make and review decisions of committee processes— like the allocation of Board of Internal Economy-approved funds to standing committees, approval of committee budgets, and the structure and delivery of reports, among other duties.

Marilyn Gladu said being forced to have virtual meetings during the pandemic has created some challenges.

"We're having quite a bit of difficulty with translations and damage to some of the translators' ears from people not having appropriate headsets and the sound not being well controlled," said Gladu. "From a safety perspective we want to do something there, and I think there are efficiencies happening as well at committee in terms of switching from in-camera meetings to public meetings."

Gladu said committee spending is actually lower than normal right now because of decreased travel expenses during the pandemic.

Her role is to assist the chair, and assume the position when the chair is absent.

Gladu is also chair of the Standing Committee for the Status of Women.
