Ice jam on St. Clair River prompts flood watch

An ice jam on the St. Clair River at Port Lambton has prompted a flood watch from the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority.

Water Resources Specialist Emily De Cloet said strong northerly winds over the past few days pushed ice downriver from Lake Huron.

The United States Coast Guard Cutter Bristol Bay and the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Griffon are already working to break up the jam in the area of Algonac, Michigan.

They will be joined by the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Samuel L. Risley, and the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Neah Bay Thursday morning.

Southerly winds, expected to gust to as high as 70 kilometres an hour by Friday, may impact the movement of ice and could exacerbate water levels.

De Cloet said residents along the St. Clair River may experience minor flooding and possible shoreline erosion from the ice jam and winds.

St. Clair Township Public Works has made sandbags available at Brander Park for Port Lambton residents affected by the flooding.

Residents are reminded to avoid shorelines, watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous ice conditions, slippery banks and swift moving water.

Children and pets should be kept away from the water as well.
