Sanitary sewer smoke testing in Coronation Park

Residents living in Sarnia's Coronation Park area shouldn't be alarmed to see smoke coming from the sewers Monday, Tuesday, and possibly throughout the week.

The city has contracted Wessuc Inc. to undertake smoke testing as part of an investigation into flooding concerns in the area. The purpose is to find leaks in the sewer and service lines by forcing smoke into the system using a high-pressure blower.

The smoke is non-toxic, and white to grey in colour. While it might have a slight odour, it's harmless to people, plants and animals.

Those who notice smoke or a smell coming from the plumbing inside of their home are asked to quickly ventilate as it's an indication that dangerous gases could be leaking. The city said correcting issues with pipes and sewer lines on private property is the owner's responsibility.

The chance of smoke entering a home can be minimized by running water into the tub, sink and shower to fill the sewer traps.

Impacted streets include Buckingham Road, Tweedsmuir Avenue, Minto Street, Kensington Boulevard, Tunis Avenue, Germain Street, and Murphy Road between Kensington and Preston Avenue.

Residents and businesses in those areas have already received notices in their mailboxes.
