COVID deaths in Sarnia-Lambton increase by two

Lambton Public Health reported two additional COVID-19 deaths Monday morning, bringing the community's death toll to 33.

Bluewater Health said it has 15 COVID-positive patients in hospital, and the number of patient deaths is at 22. Chief of Communications Julia Oosterman said the latest two deaths at the hospital, reported over the weekend, are related to retirement homes in outbreak.

The health unit said there were 31 new confirmed cases over the past 24 hours for a total of 1,647 since March. The number of resolved cases increased by 27 at 1,374, putting the active case count at 240, an increase of two. Since December 13, the number of new cases has increased by 1,200.

The number of active outbreaks is at 14, including 10 in long-term care and retirement homes. An outbreak declared at Sarnia's Vision Rest Home January 13 has quickly spread to include 16 residents and three staff. Since being declared December 30, 2020, an outbreak at Village on the St. Clair Retirement Home now includes 22 residents and eight staff and there have been two deaths. At Twin Lakes Terrace Retirement Home, there are 16 residents infected and five staff.

There are three active workplace outbreaks with a total of 18 cases.
