Sarnia airport action committee could take flight Monday

The city is making progress with the creation of an airport action committee.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley said council will be asked to support its establishment Monday.

"The city is moving forward, now that we've extended the contract for one year at the airport with the private operator, and we're looking at all the suggestions that came through," said Bradley. "One of the ones was an excellent one from the chamber of commerce to look at a taskforce. What is being recommended is a working group, composed of key individuals in the community, working with city staff, to look at other options, beyond just the operation of the airport to bring in other revenues."

It's hoped council could receive the committees work plan by February 8, so members could be recruited by the end of that month.

"I think it's a good direction, I think it's great, it's going to engage the community and now that we've extended the contract with the operator for a year, we've got time to do it properly."

It's proposed the committee hold its first meeting in March and provide feedback to council in April.

A timeline also suggests hiring an airport business development specialist.

Sarnia council approved $360,000 during 2021 budget deliberations last December to continue operations at the airport this year.

In the fall of last year, consultants had recommended it be sold.
