Well-known member of local sports community dies

A well-known member of the Sarnia-Lambton sports community has died.

Marty Wilkins passed away at London's University Hospital on Monday, January 11.

He had a successful career in sales, including at Blackburn Radio and the Sarnia Sting, and had a passion for sports with hockey, ball and golf among his favourites.

Marty played SMAA travel hockey, junior hockey in Petrolia and Clearwater, varsity hockey and golf at Peterborough's Sanford Fleming College, and slow pitch that took him to the Canadian finals. He also coached hockey teams in Sarnia, Point Edward, and Mooretown.

Due to pandemic restrictions, a private family service has been held. Friends and family are invited to a memorial drive-by to honour Marty, this Friday, January 15, from 12 p.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia. A celebration of Marty’s life will be held at a later date.

Sympathy may be expressed through donations to the Sarnia Hockey Association Adopt-A-Player or Diabetes Canada.

Marty Wilkins was 51.
