Construction of a new commercial truck rest area is planned along Highway 402 westbound this year.
The Ministry of Transportation has announced the former North Commercial Vehicle Inspection Facility, near Wyoming, is one of 10 new rest areas that will be built, as part of a five-year plan to keep Ontario roads and highways safe.
In an email to Blackburn News, MTO Issues Advisor Michael O'Morrow said construction is set to begin in April and be completed in July 2021.
"The scope of work includes re-paving of the parking area, temporary washroom facility, repairing the concrete at the entrance and exit ramps, removing an existing temporary concrete barrier to open the exit and entrance ramps, pavement markings and signage, new approach lighting on exit and entrance ramps, new parking area lighting, installing two cameras for monitoring, and cleaning out ditches to maintain drainage," said O'Morrow.
He said a need for truck parking along the 402 was identified as part of an MTO analysis to prioritize additional truck parking locations.
"This stretch of highway is also not served by an ONroute, and due to winter weather conditions in the area, the need for additional truck parking along the 402 was warranted."
The project is expected to cost $1.25 million and will accommodate up to 14 commercial vehicles with 12 spaces for transport trucks and two for long combination vehicles.
Provincewide, there are plans to improve 14 existing truck rest areas, and add 178 additional parking spaces at four existing ONroute travel plazas.
