Hot sauce donation spices up struggling United Way campaign

A popular local hot sauce has added some spice to the struggling Sarnia-Lambton United Way campaign.

Over the summer, Top Shelf Canada donated one dollar from the sale of every bottle of Front Street Heat hot sauce to United Ways across the country.

The company chipped in $10,400 nationwide, including nearly $2,000 here in Sarnia-Lambton.

With just three weeks left to go in the local campaign, $1.1 million or 57 per cent of the $1.9 million target has been raised.

Executive Director Dave Brown said they're still very concerned about possibly falling short.

"With COVID-19, low oil prices and a number of other factors, it's all weighing in on the campaign," said Brown. "We are however urging all people who had planned to make a donation or made a donation last year but not yet this year, to please get those donations in. They can call the office or log on to our website."

Brown said they're hoping to see things pick up in the final weeks.

"We are still expecting two or three large employee and corporate donations yet to come in, so we do anticipate a fair bit of growth over the next week or two."

Brown said if they don't reach their goal, some cuts may be necessary.

A total of 18 local agencies providing 36 community programs and services to the community rely on the United Way for funding.
