'Rigorous contact tracing' at Shell Corunna following COVID outbreak

Shell Canada says it's closely monitoring an outbreak of COVID-19 at its manufacturing centre in Corunna.

Media Relations Manager Tara Lemay confirmed Saturday that there are two positive cases at the plant.

"Keeping our employees, customers and local communities healthy and safe is core to how we work at Shell and this remains our top focus as we continue with essential work during COVID-19," said Lemay in a statement. "Unfortunately, Monday, November 30, we identified our first positive COVID-19 case at Shell’s Manufacturing Centre in Corunna, and on Thursday we confirmed a second positive case. Our thoughts are with our colleagues as they rest and recover."

Lambton Public Health declared a workplace outbreak Thursday but does not identify affected workplaces unless it believes public notification will help identify close contacts.

Lemay said Shell is working with public health to conduct rigorous contact tracing and to notify close contacts, asking that they self-quarantine in line with public health guidance.

"We are asking employees and contractors to stay home and follow public health guidelines if they are feeling unwell, we have mandatory screening protocols for all employees, contractors, and visitors who come to site and we have a work schedule that provides a segregated approach, limiting the amount of people on site and safeguarding against crowded areas. We have strict safety measures in place at site, which include physical distancing where possible, requiring face coverings to be worn in all indoor spaces and other appropriate PPE measures," she said.

Lemay said contact tracing is being managed through Lambton Public Health and they will continue to follow the advice of health officials and monitor the situation closely to ensure everyone’s wellbeing.

For privacy reasons she said they cannot share which departments the infected individuals are from.
