TSL launches gift card program to support local economy

If you're having a hard time choosing where to buy gift cards this holiday season, Tourism Sarnia-Lambton (TSL) might have just what you're looking for.

The agency has launched a program that offers $10, $25 or $50 cards which can be redeemed at over 275 local businesses.

Executive Director Mark Perrin said they encompass restaurants, retail, attractions, and accommodations.

He's hoping it will build on the success of the Discover Sarnia-Lambton Travel Rewards Program, launched over the summer.

"What we found is that putting almost $300,000 into that program has really created about $4 million in economic impact," said Perrin. "We're seeing that a $10 voucher gets spent on up to a $60 meal, so it's really generating that economic impact and getting people to still support our local businesses."

In a news release, Ontario Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Lisa MacLeod commended TSL for the unique initiative.

"Supporting our local small businesses is essential as they recover from the effects of COVID-19," said MacLeod. "Tourism is a $36 billion industry that fuels every community in Ontario and right now we need to support hyperlocal tourism initiatives which is why I applaud Tourism Sarnia-Lambton for their efforts to partner with over 275 tourism partners as they continue to encourage hyperlocal tourism in Lambton County."

Those wishing to buy gift cards, or businesses wanting to sign up for the initiative, can call Tourism Sarnia-Lambton at 519-336-3232.

Cards will also be available on-site at 1455 Venetian Blvd. in Point Edward.
