Lambton Public Health says influenza B circulating in community

Lambton Public Health is reporting a lab-confirmed case of influenza B.

The health unit said late Tuesday afternoon that an individual in their 60s is currently hospitalized and that the local case is a signal that the virus is circulating in the community.

Health officials said early reports have indicated that influenza cases are lower across the province, likely due to enhanced safety measures in place for the COVID-19 pandemic.

They warn that respiratory illnesses like influenza and COVID-19 can have a significant impact on vulnerable populations and that individuals with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions have more difficulty fighting off any related illness.

"The transmission of influenza essentially requires individuals in our community to follow the same public health safety measures in place for COVD-19," said Lambton Medical Officer of Health Dr. Sudit Ranade. "Individuals can make a difference by following the public health guidance and look for support from businesses and organizations to limit the risk to individuals, employees and clients or patrons, through continued adherence and implementation of public health safety measures."

Lambton Public Health said reducing hospitalizations is vitally important with the pandemic placing more demands on hospitals in regions with significant case numbers and outbreaks.
