Sarnia councillor wants to be warden of Lambton County

Three Lambton County councillors have now thrown their hats into the ring for the position of warden.

Sarnia City Councillor Brian White joined the race Wednesday morning.

"I decided to seek the opportunity to serve as Lambton County Warden, because I think it's a good opportunity for us as the City of Sarnia to build stronger relations with the county," said White. "Of late, there's been some concerns with the county and I think the best opportunity to bridge the gap between city and county, is to have a representative from the city serve as warden for a term."

White thinks it's a good time for him to step forward.

"I really feel strongly that coming out of the pandemic, it's the time to have a champion leading council at the county, who will stand up for poverty, housing, and addictions, as well as other health-related issues. I'm very concerned that those things will get left behind, simply because of the budget constraints that will be put on all the municipalities."

White said he's comfortable leading a large group now.

"I've served six years prior to this as chair of St. Clair Child and Youth Services, which had a direct link with the ministry, as well, I'm the chair of the Family Advisory Committee at CPRI (Child and Parent Resource Institute), which is the only agency directly run by the ministry in children's and youth mental health. So, I've got a lot of experience organizing and chairing meetings, as well as working directly with minsters."

Lambton Shores Mayor Bill Weber is seeking a third term as warden and Enniskillen Township Mayor Kevin Marriott is looking to move up from deputy warden.

Point Edward Mayor Bev Hand, Warwick Township Mayor Jackie Rombouts and Sarnia City Councillor Mike Stark are vying for the deputy position.

Candidates can announce their intentions right up until the secret ballot election which is set for county council’s December 2 meeting.
