Man charged in Queen Street apartment fire

Sarnia Fire and Rescue says an early morning apartment fire on Queen Street was intentionally set but police say an arson charge will not be laid.

Crews were called to the 100 block at around 3:55 a.m. and were able to remove one occupant from the unit without any injuries.

The fire was contained to the unit where the fire started and there was no extensive damage.

Sarnia police took over the investigation and determined a 44-year-old male tried to barricade himself inside the apartment but firefighters were able to make entry.

The man was taken into custody, where he remains, and is facing a charge of mischief over $5,000.

Due to the nature of the investigation, police said the suspect’s name will not be released.
