Safety enhancements planned at London and Brock

New traffic safety measures are planned at Sarnia's London Road and Brock Street intersection.

Robert Dickieson told council he sees accidents and near misses on a regular basis.

"What happens all the time is that motorists are running the red light and other craziness, which includes going the wrong way on the one way [street]," said Dickieson. "I own the house at 204 London Rd., as well as another house on Vidal Street, so I regularly cross the street to access my two properties and there was several close calls, that not just my life, but also the life of my son, risked."

In June 2019, a 22-year-old man suffered serious injuries in a crash between a car and motorcycle at the intersection.

In addition to voicing his concerns, Dickieson offered numerous solutions.

"I would like to ask city council to explore the idea of a red light camera at this intersection. I've seen motorists just miss it entirely. They run through it, not even aware there was a red light at all."

Dickieson also asked that the speed limit be reduced, given the intersection's proximity to London Road Public School, and that motorists not be allowed to turn right on a red light off Brock.

For now, council has directed staff to paint a ladder crosswalk and install a temporary traffic signal, ahead of signage, in the east-west direction on London Road.

Earlier in the year, Dickieson released a YouTube video showing a number of incidents at the intersection -- click the link below to view the video.
