Volunteers sought after city greenlights Celebration of Lights

Sarnia-Lambton residents are being invited to 'light up' the holiday season this weekend, as the Celebration of Lights committee seeks volunteers to put up the annual displays.

Committee Member Chuck Archer said the City of Sarnia gave the celebration at Centennial Park the green light to proceed this year.

Archer said the group is now asking for help the morning of November 21.

"So this particular year, we would normally be a little more advanced in some of the planning, you know because we would've not had to bump into any of these [pandemic] protocols," said Archer. "So we're a little concerned about getting enough volunteers out on the Saturday to do some of the legwork around setting up the lights and the displays on that particular key day."

Archer said they begin at 9 a.m. and wrap up between noon and 2 p.m.  He said they're hoping to get at least 20 volunteers.

"A lot of the comments I've been getting from the community is the question 'are you able to set up this year?' So I think it's just the premise that the people were unsure of what's open, what's not open, and we're definitely planning to open and run the display as per usual."

Archer said a number of measures will be taken during the setup to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, including mask-wearing, social distancing and taking volunteers' contact information.

He said while they'd welcome volunteers showing up unannounced on November 21, they'd prefer a heads up. To sign up, email info@celebrationoflights.com.
