Petrolia man dies from gunshot wound, SIU investigation continues

The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says a 40-year-old Petrolia man, who suffered a gunshot wound late last month, has died of his injuries.

At around 7:30 p.m. October 26, Ontario Provincial Police officers responded to a residence for reports of a man in distress.

About three hours later, the Emergency Response Team entered the rear of the property and found the man who was taken to hospital in critical condition.

The SIU said Tuesday that the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead in hospital November 1.

The unit continues to investigate and has assigned one subject officer and six witness officers to the case.

The SIU initially reported that the gunshot wound was believed to have been self-inflicted.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The unit is also urging anyone with video evidence to upload it through the SIU website.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or an allegation of sexual assault.
