MADD Sarnia-Lambton launches pandemic-altered red ribbon campaign

Sarnia City Hall will be illuminated in red until Sunday in support of sober driving during the holiday season.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving Sarnia-Lambton kicked off its annual red ribbon campaign Sunday, which raises awareness about the risks and consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol, cannabis and other drugs.

Spokesperson Natalie Andrews said the campaign will be run differently this year.

"Because of COVID, we're not able to do our voluntary tolls the third week of November which we have done for 15, 16 years, which is our biggest fundraiser which helps us to keep being able to educate and keep bringing the awareness to the dangers of driving impaired," said Andrews.

She said the white cross set-up will be different as well.

"Each cross that we put up, represents a life that will be lost during this holiday season from today until January 1 -- way too many," said Andrews. "Again, because of COVID, we are setting up our crosses Saturday, November 7, at Mike Weir Park, we're not able to have any volunteers, so it's just going to be the board members that will be putting the crosses in and attaching the ribbons."

She asks if you already have red ribbons, that you tie them to show your support.

Andrews invites residents who want red ribbons to contact the Christina Street North office, at (519) 339-9962, and they'll get you one.
