High winds cause damage, power outages Sunday

Bluewater Power crews were kept busy Sunday as extremely gusty northwest winds damaged the hydro grid and caused outages.

Utility CEO Janice McMichael-Dennis said a tree fell into hydro lines at Mandumin Road and Michigan Avenue Sunday afternoon, causing three poles to snap and fall to the ground.

Residents in the area were without power for about five hours.

Crews from Sarnia Fire and Rescue were also called to the scene, and helped direct traffic through the area.

McMichael-Dennis said there were two other incidents as well.

"In Petrolia, we had about 40 customers out for four hours due to a tree, and then in Bright's Grove we also had a tree come down and pull wire down," she said. " There were about 30 customers in that case, and they were out for about two-and-a half-hours. Overall, it was a very busy day but once again the crews worked their magic."

A peak wind gust of 83 kilometres an hour was recorded at Sarnia's Chris Hadfield Airport at around 5 p.m. Sunday.

Environment Canada posted snow squall and wind warnings for north and east Lambton county, and a special weather statement was in effect for Sarnia and west Lambton.

Snow accumulations of 10 centimetres to 15 centimetres, 4 to 6 inches, were reported in some of the heavier squalls north and east of Sarnia Sunday night into early Monday.

Lambton OPP reported multiple weather-related collisions.
