COVID outbreak declared at Petrolia retirement home

A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at Fiddicks Retirement Home in Petrolia.

Bluewater Health said Friday an 86-year-old female was initially taken to Petrolia hospital, and has since been transferred to Sarnia.

In an email to Blackburn News, Fiddicks Director of Resident Care Mandy Judah said a retirement home resident tested positive late Thursday evening.

She said Lambton Public Health has reached out to any close contacts in the event of an unprotected exposure, and said no other residents or staff members have tested positive.

They've all consented to get a COVID-19 test, to address potential exposure, and further visitor restrictions are in place at this time.

Judah said Fiddicks has taken swift action to halt the spread of the virus through rigorous infection management practices and procedures.

"We are working in close partnership with our public health unit to ensure every possible step is taken to protect our residents," said Judah. "The health and safety of our residents, and the team members who serve them, is our highest priority."

A letter was sent out to residents and family members on Friday.

Lambton Public Health confirms it's supporting an open investigation at the home, but provided no further details.

The health unit said the case will be included in Friday night's updating of local COVID-19 figures, posted to its website.

Fiddicks Nursing Home and Retirement Home has 165 residents with a large majority of the population from Lambton County.
