From record high to frost advisory

Bizarre late October weather has seen the Sarnia-Lambton area go from record warmth to a frost advisory.

A new record high of 24.7 C, 77 F, was set at Chris Hadfield Airport Friday afternoon, breaking the previous mark of 23.1 C for October 23 set in 1991.

After the humidex had reached 30 C, 86 F, in Sarnia Friday, the arrival of a sharp cold front sent the temperature plunging as winds shifted northwesterly.

On Saturday, Environment Canada issued a frost advisory with a low of -1 C, 30 F, forecast Saturday night.

The weather agency warned that frost may damage some crops in frost-prone areas, and recommended preventative measures be taken to protect frost-sensitive plants and trees.

A Colorado low brought a variety of weather Friday with southern Ontario basking in temperatures more typical of summer.

Environment Canada reported Saturday morning that several supercell thunderstorms affected areas near Georgian Bay with numerous reports of large hail up to the size of golf balls. Hydro One was still dealing with power outages in parts of the province Saturday, largely in central Ontario.

A severe thunderstorm warning and tornado watch were issued in Sarnia-Lambton Friday afternoon but there were no reports of funnel clouds touching down or significant weather-related damage in the area.
