The Town of Plympton-Wyoming has announced that its fire chief has resigned.
In a news release Friday the town said that Steve Clemens, the director of fire and emergency services, has stepped down effective October 23.
The municipality said Clemens wants to focus on his personal life and to pursue other professional opportunities.
Mayor Lonny Napper thanked Clemens for his service.
"On behalf of council and staff, I thank Chief Clemens for his valuable service and contribution and wish him well in his future endeavours," said Napper in a statement.
The town said the fire executive committee is currently evaluating options for filling the vacancy.
Mr. Clemens became fire chief in January of 2017 and his tenure was controversial.
He was placed on indefinite leave in 2017 pending the results of an independent third party investigation that came after firefighters claimed a secret video camera had been discovered in the radio dispatch room of the fire hall.
Clemens returned to work after council reviewed the findings and expressed confidence in the chief, but there was more controversy earlier this year amid allegations that firefighters had been let go without cause.
