Garage destroyed by fire in Forest

Spontaneous combustion is believed to be the cause of a fire in a small, single detached, garage in Forest Monday night.

Lambton Shores Fire Department Chief Lawrence Swift said volunteer firefighters responded to the structure fire on Victoria Street, between Rail Road Way and George Street, just after 11:30 p.m.

"By the time we arrived on scene the fire was blazing," said Swift. "It was contained to the garage, but most of the contents were damaged. We're probably estimating somewhere between $20,000 and $30,000 worth of damage."

He remindedd the public that it's important to store rags with gas or oil products on them in a metal container with a lid on it.

"The garage was used as a small woodworking shop, using a number of different things, such as mineral spirits and other finishing products, and we believe the cause of the fire was a result of improper storage of used rags, used with the mineral spirits," said Swift.

No injuries were reported.
