Traditional public Remembrance Day service at Sarnia Cenotaph cancelled

A large public ceremony to honour and remember Canadian veterans will not be possible this November 11 in Sarnia.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 62 Vice President Les Jones said alternate plans are being developed for Remembrance Day.

"This year, unfortunately, because of the pandemic regulations and restrictions, we are unable to hold our normal parade from the Legion to the Veterans Park cenotaph, and we are unable to utilize Veterans Park for the Remembrance ceremony," said Jones. "We will have some type of a ceremony as a Legion, we'll probably live stream that, but unfortunately with the current restrictions, we just can't hold a large public ceremony."

Jones said the change is especially disheartening this year since 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.

He added, there are other ways to remember and honour veterans this Remembrance Day.

"Well we do have wreaths available at the Legion if people want to purchase those and lay them on their own, they can also do the poppy donation."

Jones encourages all residents to take a moment on November 11 at 11 a.m. to stop, reflect and give thanks to all the men and women who have served, and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
