Longtime Walpole Island chief upset in election

The longtime chief of Walpole Island First Nation was upset in the September 19 band elections.

In a seven-candidate race, Dan Miskokoman was defeated by Charles Sampson by 41 votes, 339 to 298.

Miskokomon was elected to his third, consecutive two-year term in 2018 and had previously served as chief in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Elaine Wrightman topped the polls for councillor with 510 votes.

There were 52 candidates on the ballot for the 12 council seats.
