Residents encouraged to take part in virtual Terry Fox Run

With the cancellation of Terry Fox runs across Canada this year, residents are being encouraged to participate in their own mini-events in support of cancer research.

People are being asked to run, walk, or bike with people in their bubble this Sunday, which would have marked the 40th annual Terry Fox Run and 29th in Sarnia.

Organizer Laurie Rome said many have already been collecting pledges leading up to the big day.

"I think there's not too many people who can say that they know no one who has either had the disease or succumb to it," said Rome. "So, everyone has their reason to run or walk."

Rome said if you can't take part on Sunday, you can do a run whenever you're able.

Last year's local runs raised $51,343 with another $40,787 coming from area schools.

She said Sarnia-Lambton's Terry Fox Runs have raised around $1.36 million since inception.

The Terry Fox flag was raised high over Canatara Park on Monday as a way to mark the beginning of this year's campaign.

You can go to www.terryfox.org for further information and to donate to the cause.
