Grand Bend summer 'OK' despite pandemic, but slowdown looms

As summer unofficially comes to a close, the mayor of Lambton Shores is expecting many out-of-towners will try to squeeze in one last beach day.

Bill Weber thinks the Labour Day crowd in Grand Bend will be similar to previous long weekends this year.

"I think for the most part, the businesses, the restaurants that have had patios, some of them have had really good summers because other ones have chosen not to open," said Weber.

He said garden centres and home improvement businesses have been especially busy as people spruce up their properties during the pandemic.

"I see a lot of no-vacancy signs up on hotels, so I think they've been busy as well. I know the cottages that are weekly rentals have been full. Real estate has gone crazy. Everything sells in a week. So, it has been an okay summer."

But, mayor Weber is expecting businesses will notice a shift very soon as visits to the Lake Huron resort community wind down.

"It's going to be tougher in the winter, being indoors and (restaurants) not having the full capacity of their seating area."
