St. Clair board prepared for flips between online, in-person learning

The St. Clair Catholic District School Board will try to accommodate students who decide part way through the year that they want to switch between online and in-person learning.

Director of Education Deb Crawford told Sue Storr on CHOK (103.9 FM, 1070 AM) Friday morning they will look at cases individually because they're trying to keep their classroom numbers down.

"October 22, we're asking people to let us know if they want to make the change in elementary, and then the change would occur November 12," said Crawford. "And then in secondary, we're asking people at the end of this quadmester, that we would want to know by January 12."

Crawford said they certainly won't be able to accommodate large numbers of students switching.

"So we couldn't move everyone -- like if everyone decided to change at this time, there's just no way we'd be able to manage that kind of change. But we're prepared for people to change at those dates and we'll reorganize to try and facilitate that," she said.

Crawford said they have a lot less students going online than other boards, about 12 per cent in elementary, over 700 students, and 13 per cent or about 360 students in secondary.

She added they've hired about 30 additional teachers in the elementary panel, and another 20 or so in secondary to lower class sizes and staff virtual schools.
