'Hard work' key to successful marriage says Lambton couple celebrating 75th

A Sarnia-Lambton couple celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary September 1 says the recipe to a successful marriage is hard work.

"I don't know, we just worked together on the farm I guess, that's it," said Betty Mitchell, wife to Wilford.

The two met at the Brigden Fair in the early 1940s when Betty was 15 and Wilford was 16 -- they were married three years later.

"We just had a couple that we chummed around with stand up with us, we went to the minister's home and were married. Then we went back to his parent's place, and my parents and his were there. And then we went to Detroit with our Ford Model A, for our honeymoon," said Betty. "It was very good, the only thing was we had to fix flat tires, because that was during the war and we had a Model A, and we had flat tires that needed fixing."

Betty added, that similar to some weddings planned before the COVID-19 pandemic, her wedding was a bit delayed, albeit, for a different reason.

"Well the reason, my husband and his dad, they had a thrashing machine and they were thrashing, so we had to wait until September to get married because they were thrashing all summer."

Betty and Wilford said they celebrated their big day over the weekend with cake and ice cream, surrounded by family, on their farm just outside Brigden.
