Plympton-Wyoming rejects mandatory mask bylaw

The Town of Plympton-Wyoming has given the thumbs down to mandatory masks.

Town council debated the issue during its meeting Wednesday.

Councillors voted 4-3 against a temporary mandatory mask bylaw, which would require residents to wear a mask in all indoor public spaces.

Mayor Lonny Napper, who voted in favour of the bylaw, said council has opted to stick with the status quo.

"We had a great discussion on it, they all decided it wasn't for Wyoming at this time and to go with what the county is doing now," said Napper. "I think it's all good, I just hope that everybody stays safe, keeps their distances and it'll all work out. I was a bit disappointed, but you know, we'll move on with it."

Napper said he's always supported the proposal for mandatory mask-wearing, adding anything that we can do at this time will help.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley has indicated he's serving notice for Lambton County Council to reconsider its previous rejection of a county-wide bylaw, at its next meeting on September 2.

Napper said he'll have a decision to make on the issue next month.

"I have to think about that now. I've always been a supporter of those, but I guess I have to make a decision whether I'm going to take the town's wishes or my own to county council."

A mandatory mask bylaw approved Monday by Petrolia council takes effect Friday.
