Petrolia approves mandatory mask bylaw

If you have business in Petrolia, be sure to take your mask with you.

Petrolia Town Council voted 6-1 on Monday to implement mandatory masks in all indoor public spaces, effective 12:01 a.m. Friday, August 14.

Children under nine-years-old, those unable to wear a mask due to a medical condition or disability are exempt, as well as those engaged in a sport or other strenuous physical activity.

Failing to comply with the bylaw could result in a fine of up to $1,000.

A recent survey of over 2,200 Petrolia residents found 51 per cent were in favour of mandatory face coverings, 49 per cent voted against the proposal.

Petrolia Mayor Brad Loosley said in a release that the bylaw is about keeping our community safe and healthy.

"It's about showing kindness to others and being considerate when inside public spaces. Petrolia has worked so well together during the COVID-19 pandemic to help keep our community safe, and this is another way that we can do that," he said.

Petrolia joins Sarnia as the only other municipality in Lambton County to implement a mandatory mask bylaw.
