Bluewater Health warns of COVID testing phone scam

Bluewater Health is warning the public about a pandemic-related phone scam.

The hospital said it's heard from residents who have received phone calls from someone claiming to be from Bluewater Health, asking for money for COVID-19 tests.

Chief of Communications and Public Affairs Julia Oosterman said it's a scam that's made its way across Canada.

"We have received a couple of calls at Bluewater Health asking if we would be doing paying for COVID testing and that people have received similar calls," said Oosterman. "When we started to do an investigation we realized that this has happened in other cities such as Calgary etc. Of course, COVID testing is free, and if we were sending someone for a COVID test we would not be asking for a credit card number."

Oosterman said if you receive such a phone call, just hang up.

"I certainly do know that Sarnia police, and in the county the police services would love to know of instances of this happening, but our recommendation at this point is to simply hang up," she said.
