Lockdown Learning Series addressing COVID impact on those with dementia

The next webinar in Sarnia-based Dr. Blake Pearson’s Lockdown Learning Series will focus on how COVID-19 is impacting those with dementia.

He'll be joined by Corunna resident and Registered Nurse Kelly Batson, and Alzheimer Society of Sarnia-Lambton Education Coordinator, Christine Wright.

According to Dr. Pearson, residents in long term care are among the most vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus — and patients living with dementia have been especially impacted.

He said the significant and prolonged changes to their routines can increase their behavioural symptoms, including violent physical aggressions and uncontrollable verbal outbursts that create safety concerns and added stress for themselves, other residents and staff.

The discussion will also focus on how cannabinoid-based medicines can be used as a safer alternative to anti-psychotics in managing dementia symptoms, what has changed in long-term care since COVID-19, and advice on how to support loved ones during this extended period of change.

Those interested in attending can sign up at https://www.drblakepearson.org/events.

The webinar is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, and registration closes at 4 p.m.
