Lambton reports first confirmed COVID-19 case in 12 days

There's been one more case of COVID-19 reported in Sarnia-Lambton.

Lambton Public Health said the number of confirmed cases of the virus has reached 287. It's the first confirmed case reported in the community since July 3.

Lambton Medical Officer of Health Dr. Sudit Ranade said he doesn't believe the most recent case is linked to any Canada Day gatherings from two weeks ago.

He said they're still investigating what the potential sources of exposure could be.

"We've had several days and several places, for example, where people have been gathering out in the open and we don't to date have any information that there's been cases exposed in that way," he said. "The other piece though is that we're still going to get cases popping up all of the time. It's sort of this strange balance between recognizing that it may not be out there in great amounts, but it's still around."

Dr. Ranade said they'll be closely monitoring the pedestrian-only pilot project on Christina Street, which kicks off Friday.

"Certainly if there are lots and lots of crowds and it becomes unmanageable to keep people apart from each other then I think they might reevaluate or revisit it. But, I think what they've been worried about primarily is that over the three months of shutdown small businesses, in particular, have been struggling. They want a way to get more traffic into those stores and getting people more comfortable in doing those things. I would say to people to really go with your own comfort. If you get to a place and you feel that it's too crowded for you, then reevaluate whether you need to be there at that time."

The number of resolved cases is also up by one to 260 and the death toll remains unchanged at 25.

To date, the health unit has received the results from 14,468 tests, of which 98 per cent have been negative for the virus.

Also on Wednesday, Bluewater Health reported that there are no patients in hospital confirmed to have the virus, however, 11 are suspected of having it with tests pending.
