Police to auction off power tools, bikes, big screen TV

Unclaimed bicycles, power tools, a wedding band and a big-screen TV will be up for grabs at the Sarnia Police Service online auction.

The event begins Saturday at 8 a.m. and wraps up July 14 at 8 p.m.

Cst. Nelson Amaral said it's held once a year, typically in the spring.

"The reason we have this annual auction is because of unclaimed, seized or found property that piles up in a very limited storage space at our headquarters."

Amaral said unclaimed property qualifies for auction after 90 days.

"These are items that we seize in everyday investigations, whether we can't find the owner or even the person who claims to own it, can't properly identify the item. That's why we always encourage people to record serial numbers, make identifying marks or even take pictures and document your belongings."

Amaral said the money generated goes into the city's budget.

"In 2019, we had a total sale of $9,170, but after auction expenses and commission fees, the city took in $7,794."

An opportunity to view the 222 lots in person will take place July 13 between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. at VanKlaveren Auctions in Plympton-Wyoming at 5283 London Line.

Viewing of the items and instructions to the auction can be found at www.vkauctions.ca.
