Weather favourable so far for Lambton farmers

The weather has been close to ideal for Lambton County farmers so far this year.

Lambton Federation of Agriculture Vice President Mike Belan said planting conditions were excellent this spring and while they could use some rain now, it's not critical yet.

"Yes, it's getting on the dry side, but for the most part the corn and soybean crop do need moisture but they're not at the flowering stage or the pollinating stage yet so it's not as vital," said Belan.

But, he said Lambton's wheat fields will likely be harvested early.

"The wheat crop, which is due to be harvested [in July], it might push that ahead a week or so because of the dry conditions. It's advancing the crop dry-down process."

Belan said everyone pulled together at the beginning of the pandemic to make sure planting was done.

"Suppliers did a great job getting products delivered and machinery fixed and everything on time to keep farmers in the field and able to plant."

Belan said farmers are a "resilient bunch" who are able to deal with anything that comes their way, including COVID.
