July peak month for grill fires

With the summer outdoor grilling season upon us, Sarnia Fire and Rescue is offering some safety tips for using propane and charcoal barbecues.

Fire Life Safety Educator Mike Otis said July is the peak month for grill fires.

He said it's important to maintain a three foot kids' safety zone around the barbecue.

"Check your barbecue tank for leaks," he said. "You can use some soap and water to test the hoses and valves to make sure that no gas is escaping. Always keep them supervised and always look when you cook. You should always open the lid before you light your propane barbecue and always keep your grills clean by removing grease and fat build up."

Otis also urges residents to keep the grill a safe distance from your home.

If you smell gas while cooking, step away from the barbecue immediately and call the fire department.

If the flame goes out, turn off the grill and gas and wait at least 15 minutes before re-lighting it.

Those with charcoal grills should only use the designated starter fluid, let the coals cool before disposing of them, and use an extension cord for electric charcoal starters.
