Habitat hands over keys to Bright Street home (GALLERY)

Three years after applying to Habitat for Humanity Sarnia-Lambton, Kelly Edwards was handed the keys to her newly renovated home Friday.

CEO David Waters said they started working on the home at 111 Bright Street in Sarnia last September.

"It was in pretty poor condition," said Waters. "Water pipes had burst in the basement and there were these massive chunks of ice that had frozen. So, we had it cleaned out and looked at it and (decided) what we were going to do, how we were going to proceed and decided we would just demo the whole inside."

He said a team of 18 people from NOVA Chemicals demolished the inside of the house, in one day, on the United Way's Day of Caring.

After that, he said work on the project moved at a much slower pace.

"Obviously COVID slowed things down," said Waters. "We could have continued if we wanted to, because any project that was started we could carry on, even with COVID, but, we thought we better keep our team safe for a while and shut it down and we did that. Supplies were a little dicey in the beginning getting things, and shelves were getting empty faster once everything opened, but it all came together."

Edwards, who had been living in a townhouse with her 10-year-old daughter Piper, said it's been worth the wait.

"I know she's got a safe house to live in now, there's nothing I need to worry about, she's got a nice backyard that's safe to play in," said Edwards.
