Public school board cuts ties with Great Lakes contractor

The Lambton Kent District School Board has terminated its contract with Jasper Construction for renovation and expansion of Great Lakes Secondary School.

Superintendent of Business Brian McKay said the board and the Concord-based contractor mutually agreed to part ways within the last couple of weeks.

The oft-delayed project at the former St. Clair Secondary School on Murphy Road began in late 2017.

McKay said the board is working through the process of getting the remainder of the work completed.

"The items to complete in the project is the finishing work inside the addition," said McKay. "So the school board will now focus on completing the remaining items, and turning that space over to staff and students in the fall for school start-up."

Originally estimated at $25 million, the project includes a new auditorium, Indigenous community room, updated classrooms and accessibility improvements.

Former SCITS students were consolidated at the Murphy Road site when the Wellington Street high school closed.
