Young Sarnia singer seeks community support in talent show

A young Sarnia singer is hoping to carry a tune to a payday of $2,000.

Charlize Lefebvre, 11, is taking part in the Moksha Canada Foundation's You Got Talent Competition & Showcase based out of Toronto.

Lefebvre recently advanced to the online voting stage of the contest in the 6-15 age category. Contestants that receive the highest amount of online votes move on to the semi-finals, held online June 20 -- the winner will be announced June 21.

Lefebvre, who attends Gregory A Hogan Catholic School in Sarnia, said it's her first "big" competition.

"It has been very exciting, but also nerve-racking. It's hard because I don't have any type of social media to promote myself, so I have to rely on word-of-mouth. It's also intimidating because some of the contestants are in music studios recording or have professional YouTube videos, and there I am in my living room with nothing but my voice."

Lefebvre said the online voting period ends Saturday.

She added that she's taken part in a few local singing events.

"Like HT Glee, Sarnia Sings, DeGroot's Winter Talent Show, Petrolia Artwalk, Lambton County Music Festivals, and I sang at a wedding once, and I also competed in Rise 2 Fame in London -- I actually made it to the semi-finals but I got strep throat, so I couldn't sing in the finals."

Lefebvre has already thought about what she'd do with $2,000 if she goes on to win.

"Originally, I was just thinking about saving it, but then my seven-year-old sister broke our trampoline and she was really disappointed, so I'm going to put the money, if I do win, towards that."

Lefebvre said she first started singing at the age of four at Kindermusik in Sarnia and that she also plays the piano.

She said some of her favourite performers include Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, Lewis Capaldi and Adelle, and that when she grows up, she wants to be an actress and a singer.
