Salvation Army drive-thru food pick-up for those in need

The Salvation Army is hoping a drive-thru food bank will help steer Sarnia-Lambton residents in need through the COVID-19 pandemic.

The local charitable organization is hosting the event Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at its Confederation Street site.

Lieutenant Brad Webster said any community members in need can pick up food.

"We're not asking for any qualifications for this, this is above and beyond our food bank, this just happens to be something that we have here and available. So we thought this would be a great way to gap that transition back to work for some people, off of EI and CERB and back to work, there may be a small gap in their finances. What we are asking for is some sort of proof of address to make sure that you do reside in the county."

Webster said they have 700 boxes available, which they're hoping to get out to as many people as possible.

He said hopefully, it's a quick and easy process.

"We're only going to be accessing vehicles. We're going to have people drive in, they're going to show their I.D. through their window -- no contact there, no questions, just hold your I.D. up to your window," said Webster. "Once we confirm your I.D., that you're a resident of Lambton County, we'll write your name down, you'll pull up, pop your trunk, a volunteer will put an emergency food box into your truck, as well as a few other goodies, and you're on your way."

Back in March, at the beginning of the pandemic, Webster said they experienced a shortage of donations and were using reserve food stockpiled from Christmas.

Despite the shortage, Webster is once again reaching out to everyone in need, even if you haven’t used their food bank in the past.

"One of the things that we have seen during this COVID experience is a lot more access by people we typically wouldn't see come through our food banks. It's really opened our eyes to how many families are living in circumstances that, you know, it just takes a major event to throw off finances. We really don't want people to have to decide between feeding their family and paying a bill."
