High-rise at London Road Shopping Centre gets council nod

Plans for a new residential high-rise off of London Road in Sarnia have received city council support.

An official plan amendment was passed unanimously Monday for an 11-storey high-rise with 133 rental units at the southeast corner of the London Road Shopping Centre.

Councillor Bill Dennis said it couldn't come at a better time.

"A building with 133 units is a welcome addition to the city," said Dennis. "I was pleased to see the parking issue is workable with excess parking, at approximately 400 spots at peak times, available at the shopping centre."

The plaza has undergone a complete transformation in the past five years with the additions of Tepperman's, Giant Tiger, Twisted Arm and a new commercial unit in the middle of the parking lot.

"We need this development, and more importantly the jobs and spin-off it will bring, along with the additional much-needed building housing stock. I will most definitely, wholeheartedly, be supporting the staff recommendation to facilitate this valuable project."

Councillor Mike Stark said he believes it will really benefit Lambton College.

"I think it's high time that we address the issue of housing stock relative to the college," said Stark. "I really believe that this is an opportunity where the college can tap into this. It's within walking distance to the college and makes sense for supplementing what the college needs in terms of residential additions, so I will support this."

Elison Developments has said the first floor of the development would include 1,000 square feet of commercial space, with floors above used for apartments.
