Results of Drive-by Bottle Drive for Inn 'astonishing'

Organizers say the results of the recent Drive-by Bottle Drive in support of Sarnia's Inn of the Good Shepherd were astonishing.

The Sarnia-Lambton community helped raise $27,255 over three days.

It took six transport trucks, hauling 146 pallets to carry the load of empties to the Beer Store's centre in London.

Executive Director Myles Vanni said they sorted the bottles and cans for two weeks with help from over 100 volunteers and local businesses.

"We're seeing our regular fundraising events cut back or cancelled, and of course there's an extra need for things," he said. "We've got lots of summer programs that we're trying to put together right now, making sure that our mobile market, and our children's snack packs and back to school kits are going. This is going to be a great help toward those."

Vanni said they will be sending out about 1,000 food boxes this month to assist 2,500 people.

He said they usually serve about 1,800 people monthly.

Organizer Melanie Rogers had initially hoped the collection would raise around $5,000.
