Pandemic leaves organ donor group in desperate need

The Sarnia Organ Donor Awareness Group has been forced to cancel both of its annual fundraisers due to COVID-19, leaving them with no projected income for the year.

The group said Jazz and Blues in the Village, and the 27th annual golf tournament have been shelved.

Those events generally bring in at least $25,000 in combined revenue.

Vice Chair Sue Morrison-Weir said there's a lot of uncertainty because they don't receive government funding.

"There are lots of things we could cut back on obviously, but the one thing that we cannot cut back on is the financial assistance that we provide to Sarnia-Lambton patients. At this point, we really don't know what's going to happen this year."

Morrison-Weir said her fingers are crossed that senior government will provide some kind of relief.

She said the organization's goal is to spread awareness about the importance of being an organ or tissue donor, and financially and emotionally support transplant patients in Sarnia-Lambton.

She said they typically help about 10 patients per year, and notes people are 20 times more likely to need a transplant than to become a donor.
