Founding teacher, former president of Lambton College dies

A former president of Lambton College who was a member of the founding teaching team at the school has died.

George Allan passed away at his home in Sarnia on Friday, May 15, one week after celebrating his 85th birthday.

Born in London, Ontario, Mr. Allan received a bachelor of engineering degree from McGill University in Montreal but soon followed his true calling and entered the teaching profession. He became an enthusiastic participant in the “New Math Era” and obtained his master of arts in mathematics at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, in 1967.

Ontario community colleges had just been established at that time and Mr. Allan and his wife Janet came to Sarnia where he launched a 27-year career at Lambton College. He served as a teacher and administrator, and held the position of academic vice president and then president from 1983 to 1985.

George Allan had a passion for golf, and cinema, and his interest in Greek history and archaeology led him to become the treasurer of the Canadian Institute in Greece in Athens.

A virtual memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2020 at 11 a.m. Details on how to access the service will be posted on George’s Facebook page and on the McKenzie & Blundy Funeral Home website.

Mr. Allan enjoyed the time he spent at his ancestral family home in Wroxeter, Ontario, and the cemetery in Wroxeter will be his final resting place.

Memorial donations can be sent to The Sarnia Community Foundation, 110-560 Exmouth St., Sarnia, N7T 5P5 or to the Lambton College Foundation, 1457 London Rd., Sarnia, N7S 6K4.
