Bluewater Granfondo feeding front-line COVID-19 effort

Bluewater International Granfondo (B.I.G.) has launched a new initiative to help feed front line hospital workers nutritious meals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chair Ken MacAlpine said they've raised $10,000 for B.I.G. Bites on Bikes.

"From that, we're going to work with a couple of local restaurants," said MacAlpine. "Initially with Red and Ko. and Steph Purdy and we are planning to deliver over 1,000 meals spread over the next ten weeks."

MacAlpine said they're not the only ones assisting with meals, so they hope to fill in the blanks.

"Depending on the need of the hospital, we can supply 50 one day, 20 the next, 100 the next day. So, whatever food they get in, we will even out the gap and maybe by the time it's all done we've got 1,500 meals."

He said they really felt it was important to support front line staff right now.

"There's a lot of sacrifices being made. So, we felt this was a pretty small part we could play to try and help make things better for them and show our appreciation to them."

MacAlpine remains hopeful the fifth annual Granfondo will go ahead as planned in August.

He said the committee will make a final decision when more information is available about the length of the state of emergency and social distancing measures.

MacAlpine said the safety of riders and volunteers has always been a top priority, and will be a key factor in the decision.

Money raised from the Granfondo supports St. Joseph’s Hospice and Bluewater Heath Foundation. That includes over $60,000 last year.

If the event has to be cancelled riders can either use their registration fee for 2021, donate it to St. Joseph's Hospice or Bluewater Health, or have their money refunded.

MacAlpine is encouraging positive distractions like solo cycling during the pandemic.

He said it's an ideal activity to maintain balance while ensuring safe separation from pedestrians and other cyclists.

As long as you don't have symptoms of COVID-19, or are subject to self-isolation, MacAlpine thinks it's a great time to hop on a bike and go for a ride.

Another update is expected to be provided in the first week of May.

The Tour de France, the most notable cycling race in the world, is postponed. It was supposed to start on June 27.
